Abstract
This article examines Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up as a satire of governmental denial, using the film to explore why scientific evidence is so often ignored in public policy. It argues that the film’s central warning extends beyond climate change: political leaders frequently delay action not because the science is unclear, but because cognitive biases, media distortion, and institutional incentives make inaction easier than response. Through concepts such as confirmation bias, motivated reasoning, and echo chambers, the paper shows how evidence becomes politically negotiable. By linking the film to real-world policy failures, the discussion highlights a persistent gap between what governments know and what they are willing to do, and calls for more science-based, bias-aware policymaking.
Introduction
Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up is the story of two astronomers who discover a planet-killing threat and discover that politics, media spectacle and public distractions blunt the response to the threat. Through its use of sharp and cutting satire the film exposes how government denials turn a clear scientific warning into a partisan and bureaucratic performance. The movie points to how public policy failures take shape not only by incompetence but also by things such as confirmation bias and biased/motivated reasoning and political identities, all of which make the leaders in this movie ignore the evidence that threatens their incentives or their worldview. Using close textual analysis of the film alongside examples from real-world policy failures, this paper traces how political incentives, cognitive bias, and media fragmentation contribute to the dismissal of scientific evidence.
Scientific Consensus v Political Action
At its narrative core, Don’t Look Up follows Dr. Randall Mindy who is played by Leonardo DiCaprio and an undergraduate student Kate Dibiasky who is played by Jennifer Lawrence. The two astronomers discover a comet on a direct collision course with Earth which is an extinction-level event with a near-certain probability. The science in the film is presented as unambiguous. The timeline to impact is fixed, and the threat is absolute. Yet when the astronomers bring their findings to the fictional U.S. President, Janie Orlean (played by Meryl Streep), they are not met with urgency or seriousness. Instead, she responds with political caution a “wait and see” approach. The president’s first instinct is not to act on the evidence presented to her but to determine whether acting on that evidence might be electorally beneficial. President Orleans’ dismissal of the comet mirrors a pattern of governmental behaviour that political scientists and economists have documented extensively in real-world policy failures this is where the film satire cuts deep. The scientists are not disbelieved because their evidence is weak, the evidence is sidelined because it presents itself as inconvenient to those in power. Ever since the IPCC first assessment report was published in 1990, which established a clear scientific consensus on anthropogenic warming, meaningful legislative action from major world powers has repeatedly been delayed, not because of a lack of evidence but due to lobbying by fossil fuel giants, also due to their priorities in short term electoral cycles and perhaps most importantly their prioritization of economic optics over long term environmental gains. In 2022, the IMF also warned that every additional year of policy delay in dealing with climate change exponentially raises the cost of mitigation in the future, yet that warning, much like the astronomers’ press conference in the movie, was largely absorbed into the noise. In the movie, the president’s administration seeks economic gain out of the comet’s discovery as they partner with a tech billionaire to mine the comet for rare minerals. This pattern is a structural observation that we can observe in real life as well, after the 2008 financial collapse. Governments across the world mobilised trillion-dollar bailouts for their institutions within weeks, but we never saw the same urgency for climate legislation despite several decades of warnings. It is not cynicism to suggest that scientific urgency moves at a snail’s pace until it is acquired by an economic sponsor.
The Role of Cognitive Biases in Policy Failures
In this movie, President Orlean does not ignore the comet, but she reframes it because when the scientific evidence threatens her approval ratings and her alliance with a tech billionaire, her administration rationalises their inaction and then redirects the threat to discredit the scientists who are delivering the message of the inevitable. Apart from the obvious imbecility of their actions, we can also see a cognitive process at work here, which is termed motivated reasoning. Motivated reasoning is a psychological process by which people arrive at conclusions not supported by evidence or reason but rather by their emotions and how their preconceived notions shape how they evaluate information. Confirmation bias is also very obvious in this thought process because the policymakers tend to seek, favour and remember information that validates their existing positions, dismissing the data that challenges them. The World Economic Forum also identified confirmation bias as one of the most consequential biases in political decision making around the world, its biggest problem being that it operates silently and makes itself felt systemically. When we look at real world examples, confirmation bias is reflected during the United States opioid crisis where the FDA and several other state governments continued to approve and defend OxyContin safety records standing starkly against internal studies and independent research which flagged its catastrophic addictive potential, a potential which has reared its ugly head in the states. Biases and reasoning as the ones laid out above are the primary drivers behind climate change denial amongst policymakers the movie does something interesting and rather uncomfortable, which once again resonates with the viewer. The president’s obvious inaction and denial are never presented as irrational from her perspective. Acknowledging the full weight of a threat demands a level of disruption that most political careers cannot survive this is something that psychologists called the normalcy bias a deeply humane tendency to underestimate the likelihood and impact of a dangerous event because alternatively truly internalizing them is institutionally and personally paralyzing for a president that has to manage approval ratings donor obligations and a 24 hour news cycle the rational move is almost always to minimize delay and refrain catastrophic events such as the one laid out in this film not because the science is wrong but because acting on it at that scale might unravel the very power structure that put them there in the first place.
Digital Echo Chambers
Amongst many of these movies’ brilliancies, one of its sharpest observations is not about politicians but about the media infrastructure which enables such political denial by not only making it possible but, most importantly, profitable. When Dr. Mindy and Dibiasky appear on morning talk show to announce the extinction level event that humanity was headed to the hosts almost immediately pivot to a celebrity break up and keep switching back and forth between advertisements The media is not a mere conveyor of facts but an active distortion machine, one which is constantly repackaging scientific notes as partisan noise, prioritizing emotional engagement over genuine empirical urgency. Ultimately, they do shape what the public is willing to demand from its government. And this is one of the most damning facts of this film. This also speaks very powerfully to a phenomenon that can be observed almost everywhere in the world today. Studies on the role of social media in policy formation have revealed that algorithms and engagement-driven content really amplify the cherry-picking of information and the dissemination of misinformation. Which creates echo chambers that further divide public opinion and pressure policymakers to respond immediately to online narratives instead of developing long-term actionable solutions. The real consequences and dangers of such media environments are that governments no longer need to suppress science. They simply need to wait for the information ecosystem to do its thing. With citizens fragmented and curated by an opaque algorithm, there is no collective voice we can use to challenge our policymakers.
Conclusion
It’s very reasonable to suggest that Don’t Look Up is not a film about a planet-killing comet; it is a film about humans, our institutional machinery, and our cognitive shortcuts, in an ecosystem that conspired to make collective inaction feel reasonable. I believe the antidote demands structural reckoning we need a science based communication that is built into our policy making decisions one that can mostly audit out cognitive biases and one that treats the distortions of evidence as a governance failure not as a mere editorial one for the future of all of our democratic institutions and perhaps humanity itself we must deliberately redesign and resist the forces that Don’t Look Up so devastatingly lampoons.
